Welcome to my website.

I am a computer scientist. My interests include natural language processing (particularly translation technology), machine learning and artificial intelligence, but sociolinguistics seems to influence the way I think and design products a lot.

I have worked in the commercial IT industry, the NGO sector, and academia. My employers have ranged in size from two employees to more than ten thousand. I am equally at home designing and developing systems than I am reading and writing academic papers or presenting my ideas to people.

I have extensive experience in the field of software localisation — the process whereby software is adapted to a new cultural and language community. My contributions over the last few years contributed greatly to the state of support for Afrikaans in especially the world of free and open source software. I was also involved in the development of software for translation and the management of translation projects, and had the privilege to train people across Africa in localisation on several occasions. More information is available about my projects and talks.

I have a PhD from the University of South Africa, and I am a member of the Suid-Afrikaanse Akadmie vir Wetenskap en Kuns (the Afrikaans academy of science and arts).
